Good News Garage

“How beautiful on the mountains are the feet
of those who bring good news . . . “ Isaiah 52:7

The New England District helps support the Good News, an affiliate of Lutheran Social Services of New England. And you can help the District with a gift! Just click the button below and "Give Now."

Good News Garage began in 1996 in Burlington, Vermont, when it was learned that people had to turn down jobs because they had no transportation to get to work. The program matches donated vehicles to people who have a job or a bona fide job offer. The Good News Garage has received the Peter F. Drucker Award for Non-Profit Management, and has been cited by HUD for Best Practices in 1998 and in 1999, and in 2000 for one of HUD’s Best of the Best non-profit agencies.

Good News! You have a car! You no longer need to use your feet for transportation.

Although Good News Garage began in Vermont, it now has offices in Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Hampshire and Vermont. Since its inception in 1996, it has matched more than 2000 families with vehicles to use in going to work or to job training. In the past year, 317 families have received a car.

Once a Good News Garage accepts a vehicle, it is either matched to a donor or auctioned. The cars that are auctioned are cars that are too expensive for clients to insure and maintain. The money received from the auction pays for repairs of cars that will be matched to donors. It also goes for overhead, so that the program, like its clients, can be self-supporting.

Good News Garage provides car kits for the recipients. These kits vary, but can include jumper cables, oil, brake fluid, transmission fluid, wax, chamois, buckets and ice scrapers.

The program’s biggest need is donations of cash and cars.

Your cash donation will be used for:
  • Repairing donated cars
  • Promotion of the program so that more people are aware of it
  • Towing costs
  • Car Kits
